Growth is rarely easy. Sometimes, it requires us to leave behind what is comfortable, familiar, and even safe. In my latest podcast episode, Shedding Skin, I explored what it means to go through this painful yet necessary process.
Much like a snake shedding its skin, personal growth often demands that we let go of the old layers—our habits, identities, or beliefs—that no longer fit who we are becoming. But let’s be honest: the process is rarely graceful. It’s messy, uncomfortable, and sometimes downright painful.
Why Shedding is Necessary
When I took a fall recently and ended up with road rash, I was struck by how my body’s healing mirrored the process of emotional and personal transformation. Shedding those damaged layers of skin wasn’t optional—it was vital for healing and growth.
Life is no different. Whether it’s leaving behind a job that doesn’t fulfill us, ending relationships that no longer serve us, or stepping away from an old version of ourselves, we must shed the past to create space for the new.
The Pain in Letting Go
What makes shedding so difficult is the pain that comes with it. Letting go of something familiar—even if it’s holding us back—feels like a loss. It’s hard to say goodbye to what we once believed defined us.
But here’s the truth: growth and comfort cannot coexist. Just as your skin can’t grow without shedding its old layers, we can’t move forward without letting go of what no longer serves us.
Lessons from the Shedding Process
1. Embrace the Discomfort:
Shedding isn’t supposed to feel good. The discomfort is a sign that you’re on the path to something greater.
2. Trust the Process:
Just like your body knows how to heal, trust that you’re being guided toward the person you’re meant to become.
3. Celebrate What You’ve Outgrown:
Instead of mourning what you’ve left behind, honor it for getting you to where you are today.
As you think about your own life, ask yourself:
• What layers am I holding onto that no longer fit who I’m becoming?
• What am I afraid to let go of, even though I know it’s time?
Shedding is not about abandoning who you are. It’s about stepping into a fuller, more authentic version of yourself.
